Melissa graduated from Algonquin College’s Advanced Massage Therapy Program with Honours, where she gained experience as a physiotherapy assistant and student massage therapist amongst various varsity athletic programs. Melissa is a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT), a Sports Massage Therapist with the Canadian Sports Massage Therapy Association (CSMTA SCM), a Certified McMaster University Medical Acupuncture Practitioner and, the sole owner/operator of Mel Scissons Sports Massage (MSSM). Prior to branching off on her own, Melissa gained several years of experience as a RMT at a sport injury clinic and a physiotherapy clinic.
Melissa is a strong believer in continuing education, improving as a therapist to help her clients reach their goals and empowering her clients to play an active role in their rehab. She has completed continuing education certifications in Medical Acupuncture, Advanced Sports Massage, Sports First Responder, Athletic Movement Assessment, Rapid Release Therapy and Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM).
Melissa has worked with various populations in athletics, therapeutic and rehabilitative care. She is passionate in helping her clients prepare for athletic events, recover from athletic events and rehab any injuries or limitations to achieve their functional and performance goals. Melissas goal is always to help her clients continue to do the activities that they love to do.
Melissa presents a unique treatment style as a RMT. Her treatments commonly integrate an initial assessment, various hands on massage therapy therapeutic techniques, mobility, exercise education/movement and modalities such as cupping, blading, and medical acupuncture. It is strongly recommended you bring shorts and a T-shirt to your sessions for this reason.
As a multi-sport athlete herself, and playing soccer at a collegiate level, Melissa understands how it feels to be sidelined from injuries. She has naturally developed a true passion for working with an active population and helping her clients recover and perform to the best of their abilities.
Melissa has worked with various athletic teams and athletic events as a Sports Massage Therapist - she has experience working with Swim Canada at the 2024 Olympic Qualifying Trials, OCAA Collegiate Varsity Basketball, OCAA Collegiate Varsity Rugby, League 1 Soccer, OPDL Soccer, professional athletes in the Canadian Premier League (CPL Soccer) and Olympic athletes of team Canada.
